Ping Hostname

Hello,

For a project, I've got to use the hostnames of several computers (all Ubuntu). I have full access to them, but ultimately the operation is supposed to be remote from only one of the computers. Is the hostname the string that follows the @ symbol in the command prompt? I've tried using those, but it doesn't seem to work. Yet, I can ping all computers using their IP addresses. What am I missing?
