Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s 3-4-1-2 formation once again out-thought Pep Guardiola, primarily because Man United were happy lớn concede territory and possession for long periods of the game, something they were not prepared to do in the 3-1 defeat at Old Trafford in the Carabao Cup- According lớn the tips free soccer page!

This show of humility was the foundation of Sunday’s win, although the tireless work of the three most advanced United players should not go unnoticed.

Daniel James and Anthony Martial played as split strikers, with Bruno Fernandes often the most advanced of the three in a false nine role, and together they dropped onto Man City’s best passers lớn prevent the visitors from easily passing into the final third.

Fernandinho, Rodri, and Ilkay Gundogan were frequently man-marked, in turn forcing Bernardo Silva to come short for the ball and isolating the City forwards.

On the break, James and Martial found space on the outside of the City defenders lớn put Nicolas Otamendi in trouble – leading lớn the free-kick from which they scored the winner football predictions

In a final tactical victory for Solskjaer, his double substitution, bringing on Scott McTominay and Eric Bailly, added strength to midfield and shut down City’s right wing just as Riyad Mahrez was beginning to gain control.

The league leaders clearly missed Jordan Henderson’s influence in the 3-0 defeat to Watford last weekend, and James Milner appeared to replace him for Liverpool in a comeback win on Saturday.

Footage of Milner giving a team talk before kick-off shows his vocal role is similar lớn that of Henderson, and indeed could have been a motivating factor in Liverpool remaining calm at 1-0 down.

Milner’s brilliant clearance off the line from Ryan Fraser’s lob was just the icing on the cake for the stand-in captain.

He has often played a key role off the pitch in this record-breaking season but, making just his seventh league start of the campaign, the 34-year-old can now say he has had an important role on it.

  • Spurs look like a third-season Mourinho team

Jose Mourinho got his tactics all wrong in Tottenham's draw at Burnley.

A 5-2-3 formation with five centre-backs left Spurs unable to build out from the back and isolated the two central midfielders without any close support.

His tactics also ensured Tottenham did not have enough bodies in the middle to stop Jay Rodriguez picking up all the second balls or Dwight McNeil and Charlie Taylor overwhelming Japhet Tanganga.

But, tactics aside, this was appalling management from Mourinho. Throwing Tanguy Ndombele under the bus after the match was the latest sign Spurs have hired third-season Mourinho, a man so desperate to protect his own image he can no longer create a siege mentality with the rest of the squad. Everyone but Mourinho is excluded and blamed.

It is no wonder the players’ attitude was so poor on Saturday, so soon after he told reporters he wished the season was over and that he could only win one of the Burnley and RB Leipzig games.

Injuries are a normal part of football. It is the manager’s job lớn unite the squad and roll with the punches. Mourinho is already self-destructing, already losing support from the fans - and seemingly the players too.

  • Dull Saturday brings just nine goals

It was some way short of the record (there were just four goals in five Saturday games in April 2017), but nevertheless Saturday was a dreadful day of Premier League action.

Nine goals in seven matches is pretty abysmal and, once the early kick-off at Anfield was over, we saw the ball hit the back of the next just six times in 540 minutes of action.

The main explanation for this, aside from Tottenham’s terrible performance, is that a lot of Premier League clubs are still battling against relegation and, with many playing each other, risks were kept lớn a minimum.

It is a nervous division right now, and that usually means few clear-cut chances.
